New tax hires at EY in the US…

Todd Angkatavanich joined the National Tax Department of Ernst & Young LLP as a principal in Hartford, CT, focused on Private Client Services. Angkatavanich had been a partner and co-head of the US Private Client and Tax Group at WithersBergman LLP since June 2005. Previously, he was with Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal (now Dentons LLP) and Satterlee Stephens Burk & Burk. He earned his Master of Laws in Taxation from New York University, and holds a Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration from Rutgers. He received his Bachelor of Arts in economics from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Joseph Mariniello returns to Ernst & Young LLP in New York as a principal in the Global Compliance & Reporting practice focused on real estate. He was Senior Vice President and Head of Tax for The Related Companies since 2008. Previously he had been senior tax manager at Weiser LLP and began his career at EY in 2003. Mariniello earned his Juris Doctor from the Touro School of Law and his Bachelor of Arts from Hofstra University.

Robert Kies joined Ernst & Young LLP as a principal in Los Angeles, focused on Private Client Services. Kies had been a managing director with Anderson Tax as well as CFO of Golden Boy Enterprises. Kies earned his Juris Doctor from University of California-Los Angeles and his Bachelor of Science from Pennsylvania State University. 

Mark Opper joins the National Tax Department of Ernst & Young LLP as a principal in Partnership Transaction Planning and Economics. Opper joined EY from Deloitte Tax LLP and has previously worked with McDermott Will & Emery. Opper earned his LL.M. in Taxation from New York University, his J.D. from Wake Forest University and his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Virginia. He is based in EY’s Washington, DC office. 

Stephen Cranford joins Ernst & Young LLP as an executive director in the National Tax Department focused on Tax Technology Transformation. Cranford joins EY from IBM where he was a partner for Cognitive Solution (Watson) and Cross Industry Solution Leader since 2015. Previously, he was a vice president and global intellectual property practice leader for Capgemini. Cranford is based in Washington, DC.

Peter Marrs joins Ernst & Young LLP’s National Tax Department as an executive director with the firm’s International Tax Services practice. Marrs comes to EY from General Electric, where he held several tax leadership positions, including as Senior Tax Counsel – Tax Policy since 2013. He has also served in the Office of International Tax Counsel of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. He earned his J.D. from Yale Law School and his Bachelor of Arts from Union College. Marrs is based in New York.

Andrew Cooper joins Ernst & Young LLP as an executive director focused on tax technology & transformation for the firm’s Financial Services Office. He was previously with Excelerator Solutions, LLC and PwC where he was focused on tax technology solutions. Cooper earned his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Washington and Lee University and is based in Atlanta.

Linda Kim joins Ernst & Young LLP’s National Tax Group as an executive director focused on tax technology for the Tax and Finance Operate practice. Linda was previously a managing director at Deloitte where she worked for 18 years focused tax compliance, provision and consulting. Her prior leadership roles include, Cosourcing competency leader for the central region and Deloitte Tax Insight deployment leader with the Chief Tax Technology Office.   She received her Bachelor of Science degree from DePaul University and is based in Chicago.

AIG’s tax compliance and tax technology teams transition to EY

American International Group, Inc. (NYSE: AIG) and Ernst & Young LLP (EY) have announced a new, innovative global tax compliance and technology operating agreement that involves a combination of managed tax services and the transfer of select AIG employees to EY.

In this arrangement, members of AIG’s global tax compliance and tax technology teams integrated into EY’s tax technology and direct and indirect tax compliance practices at the U.S. federal, state, local and global levels — allowing AIG to leverage EY’s managed tax services and technology backbone, while focusing the company’s internal tax team on more strategic initiatives. The collaborative managed services agreement allows both organizations to more effectively and efficiently navigate changes in the tax landscape.

“As global tax compliance obligations become increasingly complex, we welcome the opportunity to partner with EY,” said Angela Bekker, Head of Global Tax for AIG. “This collaboration reflects our strategy to focus our team internally on impactful strategic initiatives, while providing us the ability to gain efficiencies and access leading technology solutions for our business.”

Employees of AIG’s global tax compliance and tax technology teams transitioned to EY effective March 31, 2018. The five year agreement was effective as of February 5, 2018.

EY New York hires Jonathan Stevens and Michael Lukacs

Jonathan Stevens joins the Transaction Tax practice of Ernst & Young LLP as a principal based in New York City. He had been a partner with Baker & McKenzie LLP where he worked since 2010 after spending four years as a partner with Jones Day. Stevens earned a Bachelor of Sciences and Bachelor of Arts from the University of Richmond and his Juris Doctor from Temple University. 

Michael Lukacs joins the International Tax Services practice of Ernst & Young LLP’s National Tax Department as a principal located in the New York office. He comes to EY after spending over 10 years as a senior member of General Electric’s tax department, most recently as the global tax director for GE Digital. Michael Lukacs also spent nine years at PwC. He earned his LL.M. from Georgetown University School of Law, his J.D. from the University of Detroit-Mercy School of Law, and his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor).

New tax hires at EY: Paul Chance & Jim Brennan

EY has contacted Tax Grotto with some recent Tax Principal/Partner hires:

Paul Chance joins Ernst & Young LLP as a partner focused on global tax compliance and reporting in the Florida market. Chance was a partner at KPMG where he worked since 1997, with a two year period in which he worked with a global manufacturing company. He received his Bachelor of Science from West Virginia University and is a licensed CPA.

Jim Brennan joins Ernst & Young LLP as an executive director with the firm’s Private Client Services practice. Prior to joining EY, Jim was previously a managing director with GenSpring Family Offices working with ultra high net-worth families and family businesses. He earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Business Administration from St. John’s University. Jim Brennan is based in Tampa, FL.

New tax hires at EY USA: Greg Winner and Jeremy Harris

Some recently tax hires at EY in the US:

Greg Winner joins the National Tax Department of Ernst & Young LLP as a principal focused on tax technology transformation. Winner joins EY from PwC, where he was a tax reporting and strategy consultant focused on tax function efficiency since 2005. Previously, he was with The Hartford as a Six Sigma Black Belt leading cross functional process improvement. Winner served as a Captain in the U.S. Army from 1995 to 2001. He earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from Villanova University. Winner is based in Philadelphia.

Jeremy Harris rejoins Ernst & Young LLP in Jacksonville, Florida, as an executive director focused on Global Compliance and Reporting. Jeremy has 15 years of experience serving public and private multi-national corporations. He has significant experience in income tax accounting, tax accounting methods, research and development tax credits and domestic and international corporate restructurings. From 2012 to 2017 Jeremy served as the global income tax direct for FIS, a Fortune 500 software company serving the financial industry. Jeremy has his BSBA and Master in Accounting from the University of Florida.

Serkant Kaptan joins EY’s tax technology group

Serkant Kaptan has joined the Americas Tax Technology Group of Ernst & Young LLP as an Executive Director focused on Tax Technology Transformation. He is based in Chicago office.

Prior to joining EY, Kaptan was a Managing Director leading the Application Studios Technology Practices as well as overseeing Tax Solutions Delivery Channel, Mobile Applications & RPA Solutions Delivery CoEs and Vendor Relationships at Deloitte, where he has worked since 2000. He held various positions at several software and technology companies while earning a Master of Business Administration from Northeastern Illinois University.

Kaptan received his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Bilkent University of Turkey.

Philippe Verclytte resigns from Lexmark International to join EY

Marc Sanders and team move from Taxand to EY

With effect from 1st November Marc Sanders and his team have joined EY’s Transaction Tax group in Amsterdam.

The team consists of Marc Sanders (partner), Frank Buitenwerf (associate partner), Roos Jongeneel (manager) and Timo Boon (senior). All four previously worked at Taxand Netherlands and Mr Sanders was on the Taxand Global board.

At EY they will focus on Dutch M&A deals, especially Dutch private equity funds. 

Commenting to TaxGrotto on the move, Marc Sanders said:

“We are excited about this next step for our team. We expect that our clients will benefit from the global strength of the EY organization and look forward to working with the Dutch and global M&A teams within EY.”.

Ivan Zoricic appointed MENA Energy Tax Leader at EY

EY has promoted Ivan Zoricic to MENA Energy Tax Leader with effect from December 2018.

Ivan has worked with EY in the Middle East for over 10 years and was made a tax partner in June 2017. He will continue as the Saudi Aramco Global Tax Account Leader and the Bahrain Tax Market Segment Leader, in addition to his new responsibilities.

Marjorie Rollinson returns to EY as a Deputy National Tax Leader

Ernst & Young LLP (EY) announced today that Marjorie Rollinson has joined the firm as a Deputy National Tax Leader. Rollinson comes to EY from the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS), where she served most recently as the Associate Chief Counsel (International).

“With all the disruption happening in tax – from fast-changing tax policy globally, to new business operating models – it is more important than ever to deliver impactful tax advice that aligns with and accelerates our clients’ business strategies,” said Marna Ricker, EY Americas Vice Chair of Tax Services. “Margie’s deep, multi-faceted and unmatched experience in client and government service are one of the many reasons we are so excited to welcome her back to EY.”

Ricker noted that Rollinson was involved in numerous aspects of the International Treasury guidance relating to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Her extensive knowledge of international tax technical rules and policy will enhance EY’s world class advice, perspectives and insights that we can provide to our great clients.

Rollinson was selected as the IRS Associate Chief Counsel (International) in the spring of 2016, and until February 2019 led the office responsible for legal advice, guidance and support to the IRS, Treasury and the public on international tax issues in all procedural postures. Before becoming the Associate Chief Counsel, she served as the Deputy Associate Chief Counsel from October 2013 to March 2016. Prior to joining the IRS, Rollinson was a principal in EY’s National Tax Department and served as the National Director of International Tax Services – Technical and co-chaired the firm’s International Tax Technical Committee.

Rollinson has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wellesley College and a Juris Doctor from the University of Maryland.

EY Luxembourg makes up two new tax partners

The Country Leadership Committee of EY Luxembourg has announced the admission of nine of its professionals to partnership, of which three professionals to the rank of Partner and six professionals to the rank of Associate Partner as of 1 July 2019.

Partner – Vincent Remy, Tax, Asset Management

Vincent, 41, French, joined EY Luxembourg in 2006. He holds a Masters degree in Business Taxation from Skema Business School (formerly ESC Lille in France) and a post-graduate degree in Law from the University of Valenciennes, France. Vincent has gained substantial experience on a variety of international tax matters for major alternative investment funds (including debt funds, private equity and hedge funds) as well as multinationals. He has specialized in structuring acquisitions, cross-border investments/ financing as well as reorganizations. Vincent has gained professional experience in France and has represented the EY Luxembourg firm in the US for two and a half years. Vincent is the Tax Asset Management, Debt & Hedge Fund leader at EY Luxembourg.

Associate Partner – Daniela Hockelmann, Tax, Commercial Private Services

Daniela, 39, German, joined the International Tax Services practice of EY Luxembourg in 2005. She holds a German University Degree in Law and completed the German Bar exam. Daniela has gained more than 13 years of experience in advising multinational companies in various industries on international tax matters, with a prime focus on international reorganizations, cross-border financing and structuring of complex financial transactions as well as Intellectual Property (IP) structuring. Over the past few years, she has worked for EY in Luxembourg and New York. Daniela has also gained a key sector expertise is in Life Sciences.

2 new female tax partners at EY MENA

EY has announced the admission of 20 new partners to its service lines and industry sectors across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, bringing the total number of partners in the MENA practice to 218.

There are two new female tax partners:

Heba Wadie, an Egyptian national, has been promoted to partner in the Egypt Tax practice. Ms Wadie focuses on transaction tax and international tax.

Esraa Albuti, a Saudi national, has been promoted to partner in the Saudi Tax practice. Ms Albuti works with large multinational and Middle East family groups, assisting them structure their Saudi inbound and outbound investments in a tax efficient manner. 

“I am truly proud to see the number of female partners at EY grow each year, it is a testament to our commitment to advance gender equality and create more inclusive boardrooms. To now have several female MENA nationals among the ranks of the leadership team, driving our vision and values, is an honor. I look forward to seeing how their contributions change our industry for the better,” commented Abdulaziz Al-Sowailim, MENA Chairman and CEO.
